3 Days – From industrial region to cultural metropolis
Arrival Ruhr area
Arrival and hotel check-in, optionally in Dortmund, Bochum, Essen, Oberhausen or Gelsenkirchen.
After breakfast, you will discover the Ruhr region together with your tour guide. Start with a visit of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site Zeche Zollverein in Essen, also known as “the world`s most beautiful coal mine” which is today the most famous industrial monument and centre of the creative industry in the Ruhr area. In 1847 the first shaft war sunk and in 1986 the last coal was brought to the surface before the world`s largest and latest coal mine was closed down. Zeche “Zollverein” continues to be the best preserved mine in Europe and is a symbol for past-time energy. You will also see the close-by coke oven plant “Zollverein”, where the coal was being processed to coke. Following the visit of the “Zollverein” you continue to Oberhausen to visit the 117m high Gasometer. The Gasometer is more than just an industrial monument. Built from 1927 to 1929 it has developed into the landmark of Oberhausen as well as into the identification sign of the entire region that cannot be overlooked. Entering Europe`s largest disc-type gas holder, you will probably not only get an idea of great engineering skills, but you will be fascinated by the unique experience of space in this gigantic “cathedral of industry”. Today, the Gasometer is used as a magnificent venue for numerous cultural events. In Oberhausen you will also have the opportunity to visit the shopping mall “Centro”, the largest shopping and leisure center in Europe with over 200 shops.
For this morning, we recommend a visit at the largest inland port in Europe, the Innenhafen Duisburg. Strolling along the canals with its mixture of old industrial architecture and elaborate modern buildings, with its trendy cafés, bars and restaurants, you will witness the enormous restructuring of the Ruhr area. Or how about a visit of one of the region`s legendary soccer stadiums, as for example, the gigantic and repeatedly award-winning “Signal-Iduna-Park”, the Gelsenkirchen “Veltins-Arnea” or the stadium of FC Schalke 04, one of the most modern sports facilities in the world? In the afternoon, you will return home with many unique impressions of the European Capital of Culture.
