Eastern Highlights

5 Days – Berlin – Dresden – Potsdam – Leipzig

Day 1:
Arrival Berlin
Arrival in Berlin and hotel check-in. The rest of the day is free for your own explorations.

Day 2:
City Tour Berlin
Today, your tour guide takes you on a sightseeing tour through the German capital: Visit Alexanderplatz, Berlin`s most famous square with the World Time Clock and the Fernsehturm (TV tower) Alex, with a height of 368m the city`s highest building offering a tremendous view from its panoramic floor; Berlin Cathedral, former court church of Prussia`s royal family, the Hohenzollern; the medieval quarter Nikolaiviertel; the world heritage Museum Island, uniting five important museum buildings into a harmonic ensemble on the river Spree; Berlin Town Hall, official seat of the mayor which is colloquially known as the “Red Town Hall”; the Gendarmenmarkt, generally regarded as one of the most beautiful squares in Europe; as well as legendary Checkpoint Charlie, the former border crossing point between East and West Berlin; the Federal Chancellery Bundeskanzleramt, one of the most impressive pieces of architecture in the new government precinct; the Reichstag, Berlin`s most popular sight and seat of the German federal government; Brandenburg Gate, the symbol of the once divided city; as well as the new center of Berlin, Potsdamer Platz. In the afternoon, you will visit Berlin`s green heart, the Tiergarten with the Siegessäule, reflecting the city`s history in a remarkable way; the Memorial Church Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche, as well as the most popular boulevard Kurfürstenplatz. Thenyou will have the opportunity for a shopping excursion through the numerous stores along the Kurfürstenplatz or to conclude this day in any of the near restaurants, clubs or pubs. The evening is open for your own explorations.

Day 3:
Excursion to Dresden (approx. 390 km)
After breakfast, you will go on an excursion to Dresden. Arriving in the so-called “Florence on the Elbe” your guide will take you to see the world-famous Frauenkirche Church, the symbol of Dresden, which is regarded as Germany`s most important protestant building in baroque style; the Zwinger, a most perfect example of late baroque architecture in Germany; the Semper Opera House, one of the most beautiful opera buildings in the world; the Royal Palace, which used to be the centre of power of Saxon sovereigns; the richly decorated Cathedral; the Procession of Princes, a mural painting on tiles from Meissen porcelain of over 100m length; the Brühl Terrace, a former rampart also known as “the balcony of Europe” and much more. In the afternoon, return to Berlin.

Day 4:
Excursion to Leipzig + Potsdam (approx. 390 km)
In the morning, you will drive to close-by Potsdam, where you will visit the most famous attraction of this town, Sanssouci Palace. This summer residence was built by Frederick the Great between 1745 and 1747 and is regarded as the main work of German rococo architecture. In 12 rooms, visitors can marvel at the original furniture and décor of the 18th century and feel transformed into the times of Frederick the Great, who preferred this palace and its marvelous gardens to withdraw from the world with his dogs. In the early afternoon return to Berlin. After visiting this unique Palace, you will continue to Leipzig. Your guide will take you to see the oldest city of fairs: visit the opera house, with its 300-year history; the Bach Archives, dedicated to the detailed study of the life of composer Johann Sebastian Bach; the old town hall, one of the oldest and most beautiful Renaissance town halls in Germany; the monument to the battle of the nations, a landmark of Leipzig which commemorates the first big battle of nations in human history 1813, as well as the church of St. Nikolai, the most established church of the town and starting point for the famous Monday demonstrations in autumn 1989 which lead to the peaceful revolution on the GDR. In the evening, return to Berlin.

Day 5:
After a rich breakfast, you will return home with many memorable impressions of the Eastern part of Germany.
